Lloyd “Smiley” Elton Wood, age 66, of Lamar, MO, passed away at the Communities of Wildwood Ranch in Joplin, MO, on Tuesday morning, October 22, 2019. Smiley was born March 23, 1953, in El Dorado Springs, MO, the son of Loren and Henrietta Wood. Smiley attended and graduated from El Dorado Springs R2 Schools.

Smiley worked in construction and was a truck driver in his younger years and then began his career at Walmart in Nevada, MO. He started as a night security guard and then began traveling around, leading Walmart remodeling crews. He eventually became assistant manager in the Nevada Walmart, where he worked for many years before retirement.

Smiley’s favorite thing in the world was his dog and constant companion named Turkey. He was an avid Dale Earnhardt, Sr. fan and collected all kinds of Earnhardt memorabilia. In recent years he was learning how to play guitar with the help of his favorite grandson, Donovan. Smiley had been struggling with health issues since his stroke on April 24, 2019, but on August 26, he gave his life to the Lord and loved listening to K-love Christian radio 24 hours a day in the nursing home. Smiley always loved the ladies, and he had a speech therapist named Brooke who was amazing. She often visited him when she was no longer his therapist, and he told her, “The hardest part about being a Christian now is not being able to covet another man’s wife.” We are so happy for the changes God had made in him.

Preceding Smiley in death were his parents, Loren and Henrietta Wood; his daughter, Melissa Wood; granddaughter, Kaitlyn; and brother, Pete (Terry) Wood.

Survivors include daughter Taryn Wood; grandsons, Donovan Wood and Michael Baggs; granddaughters: Kirsten Wood, Alexandria Baggs, Kyla Wood, and Natalie Wood; six great-grandchildren; five siblings: Steve and Peggy Wood and family, Mike Wood and family, Connie and Johnnie Goodwin and family, Bill Wood and family, and Lori and Tim Brooks and family; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, etc.
