Roy Eugene “Gene” Lowe, age 94, of El Dorado Springs, MO, passed away Friday, August 3, 2018, at Cedar County Memorial Hospital. He was born February 9, 1924, in Vernon County, MO, to Roy Edward and Nellie Jane (Short) Lowe.

Gene attended school in El Dorado Springs and left high school in 1941 to join the Army. He served as a medical aide and later as a surgical technician. While serving in Germany, he met his future wife, Antonia, at a dance on the base. They were married in Germany on September 7, 1946, and came back to the United States in March, 1947. On their return route they went to Holland by train, then by boat to England to pick up 72 more brides and babies before heading to the USA. After arriving in America, they took a train from New York to St. Louis. From there, they boarded the “Katy” to Harwood.

Later they went to Kansas City where Gene worked as a carpenter for 20 years. In 1971, they came back to Dederick and bought a 40 acre farm. He continued working as a carpenter for many years.

Gene enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed the local music shows, and often participated by kicking up his heels on the dance floor.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Toni, and son, Eddie Dale Lowe.

Survivors include: two sons, Billy Gene Lowe of Tonganoxie, KS, and Johnnie Roy Lowe of Shawnee, KS; four grandchildren: David, Shelly, Amy, and Sam; and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Gene Lowe will be held on Thursday, August 9, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at Bland-Hackleman Chapel. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Burial will follow in Ft. Scott National Cemetery under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home.
