Murle Lavaughn Phipps, age 80, of El Dorado Springs, Missouri, passed away at Cox South Hospital in Springfield, Missouri, on Wednesday, February 19, 2014. Murle was born February 1, 1934, to Isaac and Rhoda (Chaney) Phipps near Caplinger Mills, Missouri.

He lived most of his life in Cedar County, except for 17 years in Overland Park and Stanley, KS. Murle attended school grades 2-12 in Stockton, MO, graduating from high school in May of 1952. He attended college at SMS in Springfield, MO, for three years, taught one year at Bradleyville High School, and was inducted into the Army in October of 1956. He spent two years at Ft. Collins, Colorado, working at Headquarters typing and testing for the officers. He was discharged August of 1958, getting an early release to finish his last year of college. He graduated in May of 1959, from SMS. Murle taught two years at Mack’s Creek High School and one year at Fair Play High School. He then went to work for Civil Service, working for the Social Security Administration in Kansas City, MO, for seventeen years, taking early retirement when his health failed in 1980. He spent most of the rest of his life in El Dorado Springs living with his sister, Luella.

Murle loved to travel, and he and Luella traveled in all the lower forty-eight states and some in Canada and Old Mexico, seeing many interesting and beautiful sights. He loved music, played an accordion, and loved to sit for hours playing his organ. He recently quoted many verses of songs to his friends. He was very interested in family history, and he and Luella had traveled for miles, going to libraries and court houses to do research. He compiled several folders of information on family history.

Murle was saved at an early age and loved to go to church. He was church pianist at some churches where he attended. He worked in the downtown mission in Kansas City, and after moving to El Dorado Springs, he attended the Church of God (Holiness) as long as his health permitted.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Isaac and Rhoda Phipps; his grandparents, Green and Mary Ellen Phipps, and George and Emma Chaney.

Murle is survived is his sister, Luella, of the home and several cousins and many friends. He will be sadly missed by his sister, who cared for him during his recent years, and many neighbors and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 22, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. at the Church of God (Holiness) with Pastor Joe Trussell officiating. Wanda Casey, Faith Trussell, Vera Bourland, Cammie Housh, Darrin Griffin, Jane Griffin, and Tim Wilson provided music. Burial followed in Caplinger Mills Cemetery under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home.

Pallbears were: Dennis Greenwood, Allen Hoover, Kellen Hoover, Tom Jones, Krag Jones, and Camron Brewer. Honorary pallbearers were: Vernal Henry, Clarence Hackleman, Howard Gilpin, and Todd Leonard.
