Mildred Ann (Lugenbeel) Anson Smith, 81, of Melrose, NM, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011, at Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales, NM, following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Smith was born on Jan. 22, 1930, in Pleasant Hill, MO, to Homar and Ruth (Lightfoot) Lugenbeel. She grew up in that community and graduated from high school there. She moved to the El Dorado Springs area around 1964 with her family onto a farm south of town. She loved sewing and was an avid quilter.
On Oct. 3, 1947 in Pleasant Hill, MO, she married Ted A. Anson and they had five children before he preceded her in death in 1976. On Sept. 11, 1977 in Princeton, MO she married Ralph W. Smith. He preceded her in death in 1992.
Mrs. Smith moved to New Mexico in 1999 to be closer to her daughter, and made her home in Melrose and Portales since that time.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands; a son, Brad; two brothers, Richard and Donnie, and one great grandson.
Survivors include two daughters: Lita and husband, Terry, of Floyd, NM, and Ginger of Memphis, TN; two sons, Kevin Todd of Knoxville, TN and Gary of Nevada, MO; nine grandchildren/step-grandchildren, Megan, James, Brenda (Cortese), Robert, and Lana Byrd; Amanda and Lisa Anson; Eddie and Tina Dailey; a sister, Betty Vaughn of Archie, MO; one brother, Jimmy of Kansas City, MO; and several great-grandchildren.
A family memorial service will be held at a later date in El Dorado Springs, MO.
