William Henry “Bill” Herbst, age 73, of El Dorado Springs, MO, passed away November 5, 2018, in Citizens Memorial Hospital, Bolivar, MO. Bill was born March 23, 1945, to Fay J. and Bessie Viola (Wheeler) Herbst in Kansas City, MO. He was the youngest of six children: Fay Junior, Patsy Ruth, Robert Edward, James Franklin, Betty June, and then William “Bill”.
In April, 1956, Bill’s dad died with throat cancer, at which time Bill accepted Jesus as his Savior and was baptized at the First Christian Church in El Dorado Springs, MO. In May, 1963, his mom, Bessie, married the widowed neighbor, Raymond Taylor.
After graduating from El Dorado Springs High School in 1963, he was employed by the Bureau of Land Management for 34 years. A few years before his retirement, he bought five acres SE of El Dorado Springs, where he lived until his death. The acreage had a large lake where he loved to fish. He loved to go to auctions to buy antiques and ‘stuff”. While he was surveying for BLM he found many “treasures” which he would pack home.
Preceding Bill in death were his parents, Fay & Bessie; step-father, Ray Taylor; sister, Pat and her husband, Orville Covington, and brother-in-law, Jerry (Hoot) Gibson.
Surviving are his siblings: Junior and wife Doris, Bob and wife Bev, Jim and wife Lois, and Betty Gibson; several nieces and nephews: Bobby Fay Copple, Louis (Dawn) Covington, Lee (Lindsey) Covington, Larry (Charis) Covington, Peggy (Delbert) Oney, Andy (Dara) Herbst, Ann (Gary) Pennell, Alice (Bob) Claypool, Melinda (Dan) Wisser, and Shannon Miller; and several great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Bill Herbst will be held on Saturday, November 10, 2018, at 2:30 p.m. at Bland-Hackleman Chapel. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until service time. Burial will follow in El Dorado Springs City Cemetery under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home.
