Jessie (Cooper) Hensley, age 84, of El Dorado Springs, Missouri, passed away at her home on Wednesday, November 27, 2013, surrounded by her loved ones. Jessie was born a twin on October 16, 1929, at Clinton, Missouri, the eleventh of thirteen children born to Stith Cooper and Ella (Maple) Cooper.
She attended school in a one-room school house in Henry County until the age of 14 when the family moved to El Dorado Springs, Missouri, where she went to El Dorado Springs High School. When she was 16, Jessie’s family moved to Yuba City, California, where she got a job at a Hop Ranch and made $80 a week.
In 1948, Jessie was united in marriage to Alvin York and had two sons. On October 17, 1964, she married the love of her life, Raymond Hensley, and together they raised cattle, horses, and many acres of peaches, prunes, and almond trees.
In 1991, Jessie and Raymond moved back to El Dorado Springs, where they continued to raise cattle and farm. Jessie enjoyed reading, playing cards, bowling, dancing, cooking, canning, bird watching, and loved spending time with her grandchildren. Jessie once canned over 100 quarts of peaches in a year.
Preceding Jessie in death were her husband, Raymond; her parents; an infant son, Alvin E. York; brothers: George Cooper, Lee Cooper, Charlie Cooper, Frank Cooper, Stith Cooper, Jr., Jake Cooper, and her twin brother, Fred Cooper; and sisters: Ella Marie, Flora, and Jewell.
Survivors include her son, Donald York and wife Barbara, of El Dorado Springs, Missouri, grandchildren: Donny York of El Dorado Springs, Missouri; Kimberlee Brandt and husband Chase, of Nevada, Missouri, and Karee Wood of El Dorado Springs, Missouri; great-grandchildren: Brendan Smith, Chaden Brandt, Kevin York, Sydnee Brandt, and Taylor York; brother, Tom Copper and wife Betty, of El Dorado Springs, Missouri; and many nieces, nephews, and many, many friends.
Graveside services for Jessie were held on Monday, December 2, 2013, at Hopewell Cemetery north of Montrose, Missouri, with Rev. Brent Bland officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were: Don York, Donny York, Chase Brandt, Brendan Smith, Chaden Brandt, and Kevin York.
