Irene Mary McGehee, age 84, of El Dorado Springs passed away on Thursday morning, November 14, 2013. Irene was born February 4, 1929, at Jackson, Minnesota, the daughter of A. I. and Ellen (Kruse) Clipperton. Irene grew up on the family farm near Butterfield, Minnesota, attending country schools, graduating from Butterfield High School and attending Grace Bible Institute in Omaha, Nebraska for two years. Irene married Silas McGehee on June 17, 1949. They were married 64 years at her passing. To their union eight children were born.
She worked for several years as the office secretary and treasurer for Church of God (Holiness) Home Missions and for a portion of that time was also office secretary for the church’s Foreign Missions office.
Irene spent most of her adult life as a pastor’s wife and homemaker, providing effective and vital support to her husband’s ministry. She was a skilled hostess, and it was the norm for guests to be present at Sunday dinner. Her clear high soprano voice was often heard lifting praises to God, as a soloist as well as a member of the congregation. Even as a child her family referred to her as “the songbird.”
Preceding Irene in death were her parents, her brother Thomas, her sister Glennis, and one son, Silas Paul McGehee.
Survivors include her husband Silas McGehee of the home; brother Vernon Clipperton and wife Inez of Omaha, Nebraska; sister Joyce Noyce and husband Bob of Wheatland, Wyoming; brother Ron Clipperton and wife Dorothy of Ridge, New York; brother Noel Clipperton and wife Lois of Butterfield, Minnesota; brother Maurice and wife Barb of Mora, Minnesota; sister Athele Knutson and husband Dennis of Apple Valley, Minnesota; sister Ruth Peters and husband Don of Harrison, Arkansas; brother Sam Clipperton and wife Celeste of St James, Minnesota; seven daughters: Arlene McGehee of Overland Park, Kansas; Joyce Englund and husband Don of Overland Park, Kansas; Dorothy Purtle and husband Dwight of Mission, Kansas; Kathryn Ravenscraft and husband Bob of Easley, South Carolina; Carol Avery and husband Mark of Mexico, Missouri; Barbara Bland and husband Ralph of El Dorado Springs, Missouri; Elaine Simpson and husband Willis of Mission, Kansas; daughter-in-law Christy McGehee of Greenville, Ohio; 20 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers, all grandsons, were Eric Englund, Travis Englund, Jim Purtle, Bobby Ravenscraft, Mike Avery, Clint Bland, Josh Simpson and Joseph McGehee.
Funeral services for Irene McGehee were held on Monday, November 18, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of God (Holiness) in El Dorado Springs, MO. Rev. Joe Trussell and Rev. Steve Elsey officiated. Burial followed in Love Cemetery under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home.
