Mabel Lou Gordon, age 87, passed away at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, California, on Wednesday, October, 3, 2012. Mabel was a devoted member of the Living Church of God, and she seldom ever missed church. In fact, she was getting ready for church when she fell and broke her hip and arm.
Mabel was born February 13, 1925, to Lois (Curtis) Gordon and Bert Gordon at the family farm near El Dorado Springs, MO. She was always full of fun and energy and she would try anything. She was kind of a tomboy, and she was always pestering her brother John about going squirrel hunting. Mabel enjoyed the outdoors and especially loved all kinds of flowers. Other hobbies were sewing and crocheting.
Mabel graduated from El Dorado Springs High School in 1944. Mabel played basketball while in high school and was very good. She was tall and her nickname was “skinny.”
When Boeing opened to make airplanes in Wichita, KS, during the war, Mabel wanted to go there to work. At this time you had to pay them for the schooling before you went to work. Her dad did not think paying them was the right thing to do until her mom finally talked her dad into giving her the money. Then later on, Boeing began paying for the employees schooling. Mabel worked there quite some time. Then later she and her sister Alice went to Tacoma, Washington, to work.
In later years Mabel worked for several families that were quite prominent in California. She always ended up being sort of a nanny, and all of the kids just loved her and would come to her with questions and for her help.
Mabel had many close dear friends everywhere she went. She is going to be missed by lots of friends all over. All of her nieces and nephews loved Aunt Mabel, and all her family will really miss her.
Preceding Mabel in death were her parents, Lois and Bert Gordon; three sisters: Flossie Byerly and husband Andy, Dorothy Reed and husband Al, and Alice Slichenmyer; two brothers: Pete Gordon and wives Maude and Reva, and John Gordon; and two nephews: Thad Reynolds and Dennis Reynolds.
Survivors include one sister Donnie Reynolds and husband Jess (Tubby) of Harrisonville, MO; one sister-in-law Betty Gordon of El Dorado Springs, MO; many nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Mabel Gordon were held Sunday, October 14, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home with Pastor Carl Beyersdorfer officiating. Musical selections were “How Great Thou Art,” “Precious Memories,” and “I’ll Fly Away.” Interment followed in Mound Cemetery under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home.
